Get fit in the sun
Pippa's says:
"Why not try visiting a couple of new outdoor places this summer - just walking outside can help improve your fitness."
Outdoor sports are a great way to keep fit and enjoy the great British summer (rain permitting!). Parks, gardens and beaches become the venues of choice giving you plenty of sunshine and fresh air. Here are some great ways to keep fit with helpful tips from expert Jill Franks.
Jill's fitness health tips
- • A heart rate monitor is a great way to tell if you're working yourself too hard, or not hard enough.
- • Summer heat makes you lose water through sweating, so drinking lots of water is important.
- • Apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the suns harmful rays, and if you're susceptible to sun-stroke, wear a cap or a hat.
- • Finally invest in a good pair of running trainers, as well as fitness clothes that absorb sweat and allow the body to breathe.
Frisbee is a great way to keep fit, and you can do it anywhere. It's fun for all ages, and once you have bought your frisbee, there are no further costs involved: simply find an open spot and let fly.
Tennis According to Jill Franks, tennis has all-round health and fitness benefits: "Tennis gives you a great cardio workout, strengthens the body and is great for shaping the waistline, arms and obliques". It's also a fantastic way to have fun in.
Volleyball. Often played on the beach, volleyball is just as fun in a park or garden. Find a group of friends, set up your net and you're off. "This is real cardio and great for your legs, abs and arms" says Jill.
Hill Walking is the best way to enjoy the British countryside and keep fit at the same time. What's more, it's free. As Jill says; "it gives you a great cardio vascular workout, and is brilliant for the legs and bum!" For some great walking routes, visit walking Britain
Surfing. For the more adventurous, surfing can be an exhilarating beach sport. "It's a great way to get fresh air into the lungs" says Jill, " and the balancing involved works your legs, your core and your abdominals".
Swimming. Jill feels swimming is one of the best forms of exercise as it works every single muscle in the body. Open-air pools and beaches are also fantastic places to relax and enjoy the sun.
Yoga.Yoga works the mind, body and spirit according to Jill: "Ashtanga Yoga is a very dynamic, and has a breathing technique that gives a real aerobic benefit". Your garden is also the perfect venue. To begin, get hold of a good instructional video, a non-slip yoga mat, and some music to listen to.
Running. Forget the gym treadmill and run outdoors. It's a fantastic way to keep fit and it costs nothing. Make a date with friends and you'll be more likely to stick to it.
Cycling. Once you've bought your bike, cycling is free and easy, and great cardio. It's also a wonderful a way to spend a family day out.
